Lip Lift (Lip Reduction) and Lip Filling (Augmentation)

Feminizing the Lips

The position and size of the lips in men and women are different. Feminizing the lips involves either one of two procedures – or both – depending on your features:

  • Lip Lift (Upper Lip Reduction): placing the upper lip in a more feminine position.
  • Lip Augmentation (Lip Filling): filling the lips so they appear fuller and more feminine.

What are the benefits of a Lip Lift (Upper Lip Reduction)?

The distance between the opening of the mouth and the base of the nose is usually longer in men, and when a female mouth is open and relaxed the upper incisors are often slightly exposed. A Lip Lift is performed to shorten the upper lip, improving the visibility of the upper teeth.

The primary benefit of a Lip Lift is to improve facial appearance by showing more of the upper teeth, which is desirable in improving feminine appearance while contributing to an overall more youthful look.

How is a Lip Lift performed?

A Lip Lift can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending of the desire of the patient.

An incision is usually made under the base of the nose and a section of skin is removed. When the gap is closed it lifts the top lip often exposing a little of the upper incisors. The surgeon can also use a Lip Lift (see below) to roll the top lip out a little making it appear fuller.

The incisions are hidden in natural creases just beneath the nostrils, leaving no obvious scarring. A lip lift can easily be combined with other surgical procedures, including Lip Augmentation and Rhinoplasty.

What are the benefits of Lip Filling (Lip Augmentation)?

Women often have fuller lips than males so filling out the lips is often used in feminization. Augmentation or filling of the lips can be done a number of different ways. One of the most natural ways is to use some of your own tissue to augment your lips.

Augmentation of filling of the lips can also be accomplished through use of use of injectable fillers such as the patient’s own fat (via Fat Transfer Injection) or substances like Restylane®.

How is Lip Filling performed?

There are several ways to plump and feminize the appearance of your lips. Your surgeon will outline your options and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure.
